How I Overcame the Fear of Failing: My Journey from Failure to Freedom

A few weeks ago, I shared an Instagram story about change and asked my audience: What is your biggest fear when it comes to following your dreams?

I wasn’t surprised when 62% of you said your biggest fear is failing.

Fear of failure is something I’ve dealt with personally, and for a long time, it held me back from pursuing the life I truly wanted. In fact, one moment in my life stands out as a significant turning point—a time I considered a failure for many years.

But here’s what I learned: failure doesn’t define you, it shapes you.

My Story: The Moment I Almost Gave Up

When I first became self-employed, it didn’t feel like a choice—it felt like a failure.

It was during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the startup I worked for was struggling. I was laid off, and everything I had planned for my career was suddenly up in the air.

I had been working as the Head of Marketing for less than a year and loved the freedom that came with the role.

I had big plans to work my way up and eventually start my own business after five years.

Instead, that dream was cut short after less than a year.

My first reaction? Blame myself.
I took it personally and thought I could’ve done more.

I had tied my identity to that job, and when it was gone, I felt lost.

My self-worth was so attached to my work that losing the job felt like losing my sense of purpose.

The Job Hunt That Led Nowhere

Like many people who lose their job, I panicked.

I started applying for jobs—lots of jobs—hoping to regain control of my situation.

I was desperate to avoid the feeling of failure, so I sent out applications to roles I didn’t even want.

But no matter how many jobs I applied to, none of them felt right.

It was like I was chasing stability for the sake of it, without considering whether that path aligned with who I was becoming.

And that’s the thing about failure—it forces you to confront your fears and face your true desires.

You can either run from it or use it as a moment to grow.

How I Redefined Failure and Took Back Control

It took me weeks to realize that running away from failure wasn’t the answer.

I had to face it head-on.

I had to sit with that uncomfortable feeling and ask myself, What does this failure really mean?

For a long time, I believed failure meant the end of something. But now, I see failure as part of the process.

It’s a stepping stone to something bigger—it’s how we learn, grow, and evolve. That moment of failure was the push I needed to start my own business and embrace the freedom of being a digital nomad.

It wasn’t easy, but that failure allowed me to build a life that truly aligns with who I am. And I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.

The Lesson: Failure Isn’t Final

Here’s the most important lesson I’ve learned: Failure doesn’t define you.

It’s how you respond to it that shapes who you become.

Had I not failed at that job, I wouldn’t be here today—living my dream life, traveling the world, and coaching women who are ready to break free from the fear of failure.

That moment of failure became my turning point, and it can be yours too.

Overcoming the Fear of Failing

If you’re struggling with the fear of failing, I want you to know that you’re not alone.

I’ve been there—questioning every decision, wondering if I’ll ever feel successful again.

But here’s what I’ve learned: failure isn’t the opposite of success, it’s part of it.

You don’t have to be afraid of failing.

What if failure is just the beginning of something better?

What if it’s the lesson you need to reach your true potential?

What’s Holding You Back?

So, let me ask you:

What’s the worst that could happen if you fail?

And what’s the best that could come from embracing that failure and learning from it?

The fear of failing may never completely disappear, but it doesn’t have to hold you back from your dreams.

You are stronger than you think, and each time you face your fears, you grow more resilient.

Remember, feel the fear, and do it anyway.

Final thoughts

Failure is a part of every journey.

It’s not something to avoid, but something to embrace as part of your growth.

If you’re ready to move beyond the fear of failing and start living a life aligned with your true desires, I’m here to help you take that first step.
